Inclement Weather Alert for February 11-14

February 11, 2021

Dear University of Portland Community,

We write with an update on operations as we get ready for some likely inclement weather later today, Friday and Saturday.

Classes Will Continue Remotely

Starting at 4 p.m. today (Thursday, February 11), in-person courses should pivot to be held remotely. All courses scheduled for tomorrow (Friday, February 12) will continue remotely. Faculty who are teaching in-person should contact their students (email & Moodle) to provide instructions for remote instruction.

For courses that are usually necessarily held in-person (e.g., SON clinicals, laboratories, ROTC, etc.), faculty should exercise their best judgement with safety being the first priority, and get direction from their dean/supervisor, on whether to continue with remote or in-person instruction. Faculty should also contact their students with instructions on how/whether instruction will continue.

The Commons

The Commons will remain open so that students residing on campus are able to pick up meals. Staff working in the Commons should contact their supervisors for further instructions.

Staff

Staff who can work remotely should do so starting today at 4 p.m. and do so as well on Friday.

Staff who cannot perform their work remotely should contact their supervisors for direction.  Although we are not officially closing the University due to inclement weather, the shut-down day protocols will be in place from 4 p.m. Thursday through 8:30 a.m. Sunday for those who cannot perform their work remotely.

Student Employees

Student employees who normally work on campus, should contact their supervisors to explore the possibility of working remotely starting at 4 p.m. today and through Saturday.

Clark Library

The physical library building will be closed starting today at 4 p.m. and will remain closed through Saturday.  The Library will still have reference chat available for research questions; access to online resources will be available on/off-campus; and any books on the hold shelf will remain there for pickup on Sunday or Monday (i.e., they won't be sent back when their hold time expires).

We note that the current weather forecast is such that we expect to be back to normal operations starting Sunday (February 14); we continue to monitor the situation and will issue further communication if it becomes necessary to alter operations for Sunday.

Stay Warm and Be Safe,

Eric Barger, Interim Vice President for Financial Affairs (barger@up.edu)
Herbert A. Medina, Provost (medinah@up.edu)
Jim Ravelli, Vice President for University Operations (ravelli@up.edu)
Sara Westbrook, Director of Campus Safety (wetbroo@up.edu)
