Commencement

April 20, 2021

Commencement 2021 is almost here, and while it won’t look like the Commencement most students were expecting when they began their studies at UP, the University is doing its best to make the Class of 2021 feel celebrated while following the state of Oregon’s COVID safety guidelines for in-person events.

What to expect this year:

The official virtual Commencement ceremony premieres on YouTube at 1 p.m., Sunday, May 9. The ceremony will feature the pomp traditionally associated with commencement ceremonies, including the awarding of honorary doctorates and the University’s highest honor—the Christus Magister medal. Watch for remarks by University President Rev. Mark L. Poorman, CSC, as he presides over his final commencement as UP president.

2020 didn’t allow for an in-person component to Commencement, but this year graduating students will have the opportunity for small, in-person, physically distanced walk-through events, giving them the opportunity to don cap and gown, hear their name read aloud, cross a stage, and have a photo op with Fr. Poorman and Herbert Medina, UP’s provost. Additional photo stations will be staged near the academic quad. Due to state requirements for in-person events, the Pre-Commencement Graduate Recognition Event on Friday, May 7, is open only to graduating students, but the event will also be streamed on YouTube. Premier time TBD.

To help students celebrate, the University is assembling Commencement boxes for each graduate containing cap and gown, diploma cover, programs, a stole of gratitude and other fun surprise. Boxes will be available for pick up or will be delivered between April 29 and May 5.

Graduates and their families can also peruse the Commencement digital downloads for banners, yard signs, announcements, photo props, and social media assets to help mark the event.
