PORTLAND, OR – The start of a new academic year brings its own level of anticipation, and that is certainly the case as the University of Portland (UP) and President Dr. Robert D. Kelly welcome students back to The Bluff this week.  Adding to the excitement is UP’s inclusion in The Princeton Review’s national rankings of “The Best 389 Colleges – 2024 Edition.”  Now in its 32nd edition showcasing schools to applicants and their parents as the nation’s best for undergraduate academics and unique cultures, Princeton Review’s choice to include UP further affirms UP’s commitment to educating students holistically.

“We’re thrilled that The Princeton Review has recognized UP’s excellence in teaching and learning, faith and formation, and service and leadership,” said Dr. Kelly. “This accolade is a testament to the extraordinary students, staff and faculty who study, work and live on our beautiful Bluff. We hope that this recognition will inspire prospective students and their families to learn more about our amazing institution and consider joining us as members of the Pilot community.”

UP has been gathering a sequence of accolades dating back to last fall when it was named by U.S. News & World Report as the #1 University in the Western Region for 2022-23.  Since then, UP has also received the following noteworthy ratings:

  • Money.com Best Colleges in America for 2023 – One of only two Oregon colleges making the list, UP is praised for “quality, affordability and outcomes,” along with a high graduation rate and strong academics.

  • WalletHub’s 2023 Best Colleges & Universities Award – Rated UP as Oregon’s “Best University” based on strength in such categories as Student Selectivity, Cost & Financing and Career Outcomes.  WalletHub compares more than 900 higher education institutions from across the country in 30 key measures to determine its top performing schools at the lowest possible cost to undergraduates.

  • Niche.com “A-“ National Rating – These rankings are generated from rigorous analysis of key statistics from the United States Department of Education and millions of reviews.  In its compilation, UP was also rated as #12 among 166 “Best Catholic Colleges in America,” and #18 among 762 “Best Colleges for Nursing in America.”

Classes will begin for 2023-24 academic year on Monday, August 28.  As UP welcomes its returning students along with the incoming Class of 2027, it does so with the offering of two new academic majors – Biochemistry and Arts Administration; and two new minors – Medical Spanish and Exercise Science.  Academic and administrative leadership have also received new infusions of their own.

Dr. David C. Mengel has joined the University as its next Provost, serving as chief academic officer and leader of all matters involving faculty and curriculum.  He moves to the Pacific Northwest from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he served as Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences since 2016.   Dr. Mai Nhia Xiong-Chan has been appointed UP’s inaugural Vice President for Enrollment Management, focused on optimizing admissions and financial aid outcomes.  She joins UP from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, where she previously served as Vice President for Enrollment Management, Marketing and Web Services.  Additionally, Matthew B. Deschner, an 18-year member of the UP Admissions community, has been appointed Dean of Admissions after serving as Interim Dean since October 2022.
