Junior Julianna Pedone Becomes Second UP Appointee to Oregon’s Sexual Misconduct Survey Council

April 12, 2024

One month after the University’s Assistant Director of Institutional Research Adeya Powell, PhD, joined the State of Oregon’s Sexual Misconduct Survey Council, UP junior Julianna Pedone has accepted an appointment to the 23-member Council as a student representative.

Established in 2023 by the Oregon State Legislature through House Bill 3456, the Council will conduct a survey every two years to evaluate sexual misconduct across Oregon higher education institutions. According to the state’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission, the survey will review reported cases of sexual misconduct and each institution’s approach to preventing, reducing, handling and addressing incidents.

“I am beyond honored and excited to serve as a voting member on the state's Sexual Misconduct Survey Council,” Pedone said. “My appointment to this position wouldn't have been possible without the support and guidance of the university's Institutional Research Office, especially Adeya Powell and Michael Johnson.

“This council's work is so essential and will have a significant impact on all Oregonians involved in higher education, particularly for students impacted by sexual harassment, assault, partner abuse, and other forms of intimate harm."

In February, Pedone was honored as one of two state of Oregon finalists for the Harry S. Truman Scholarship, which identifies aspiring leaders who demonstrate a strong record of public and community service. Pedone is a research assistant in the University’s Office of Institutional Research, serves as president of UP’s Pre-Law Society, is a reporter and editor for The Beacon, and is a writing center assistant and a student assistant for the Learning Commons.

“The University of Portland is deeply committed to preventing sexual misconduct and interpersonal violence of any kind on our campus and beyond,” said Tamara Herdener, Associate Vice President for Student Development & Dean of Students. “We are grateful that our UP student, Julianna, was selected to serve on the Oregon Sexual Misconduct Survey Council. Julianna’s commitment will create a beacon of hope for survivors while driving change and fostering a safer environment for all.”
