University President: Leadership Cabinet
Greene came to the University in 1983 as an adjunct assistant professor of education. He taught part-time at the University for many years while serving in teaching and administrative roles in local school districts, most recently as assistant superintendent of the instructional programs and schools in Beaverton School District with about 40,000 students. He came to the University in 2004 as associate dean of education.
A life-time Oregon resident, Greene earned a bachelor of science degree from Portland State University (1970), a master of arts in teaching from Lewis and Clark College (1975) and a doctoral degree from the University of Oregon and Portland State University (1984). Dr. Greene holds an Oregon Distinguished Administrator License from the Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission where he served as a governor-appointed commissioner for several years.
Greene resides in the city with his wife and spends time with his adult children and other family members as well as enjoying gardening, music, reading, fountain pens, cooking, and vintage cars.
Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., was appointed executive vice president at the University of Portland, effective July 2011.
Fr. Poorman's administrative duties on The Bluff include overseeing the divisions of University operations, financial affairs, University relations and student affairs. As professor of theology, he teaches Christian ethics and moral theology. He also serves as a pastoral resident in Schoenfeldt Hall.
Poorman came to the University of Portland from the University of Notre Dame, most recently serving there as a member of the theology faculty and as vice president for student affairs from 1999 to 2010. In that capacity, he was responsible for the University's residential life as well as other student services, activities and programs, including Campus Ministry, Notre Dame Security Police, the Student Activities Office, the Counseling Center, Health Services, the Career Center, the Office of Alcohol and Drug Education, the Gender Relations Center, and Multicultural and International Student Services. Prior to his appointment as vice president for student affairs, Poorman served at Notre Dame as executive assistant to the executive vice president and the president.
Poorman graduated with a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Illinois. He earned a master of divinity degree from Notre Dame and was ordained a priest in 1982. He later studied at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, where he earned a Ph.D. in Christian Ethics. He then returned to Notre Dame to serve full-time on the faculty of the theology department, directing the departmen's master of divinity program from 1992-1998.
Prior to his appointment as executive vice president, he served for seven years on University of Portland's Board of Regents.
Lyons served as the University’s dean of admissions from 1998 to 2005. During that six year time period, applications for admission more than tripled and as a result, the quantity and quality of each incoming freshman class has risen. He also served in the capacity of senior associate vice president of University relations from 2005 to 2008.
Prior to coming to UP, Lyons served as director for enrollment services at Sonoma State University and dean of admissions at Seattle University. Currently Lyons serves on the boards of Seton Catholic High School, Catholic Charities of Oregon, Saturday Academy in Portland Oregon, Our Lady of Lourdes finance council and is also involved with Catholic Youth Organization as a volunteer youth coach. Lyons has an undergraduate degree in political science and public administration as well as a master’s degree in public administration from Seattle University. He and his wife Connie have four sons.
Rev. Gerard J. Olinger, C.S.C., serves as the University of Portland’s Vice President for Student Affairs and is a concurrent assistant professor of political science in the University’s College of Arts and Sciences. He arrived at the University in 2009 and served as an assistant hall director and a hall director. He was appointed executive assistant to the president in 2010 and directed the University’s legal affairs, facilitated strategic planning, and was liaison to the University’s Board of Regents. He also served as director of the Office of Campus Ministry’s Confirmation Program.
Fr. Olinger was named Vice President for Student Affairs in December 2011 and began his tenure in January 2012. In that position, he is responsible for an undergraduate population of 3,200 students and oversees a staff of more than 80 people in the Offices of Residence Life, Public Safety, Student Activities, Career Services, and International Student Services, as well as the University’s Health Center and Moreau Center for Service and Leadership.
Prior to coming to the University, Fr. Olinger was an assistant rector and resident assistant in residence halls at the University of Notre Dame. He currently serves as the pastoral resident of Kenna Hall; is on the board of trustees for De La Salle North Catholic High School in Portland, Oregon; is a member of the American Bar Association, the Indiana Bar Association, and the state bar in Indiana and Pennsylvania. He is also a member of the University Club in Portland, Oregon.
A native of Springfield, Pennsylvania, Fr. Olinger graduated
magna cum laude
with a bachelor’s degree in history and government from the University of Notre Dame. He earned two post-graduate degrees from Notre Dame: a juris doctor cum laude in 2004 and a master of divinity degree in 2009. While in law school he served as Executive Notes editor for the Journal of Legislation and was a member of the Student Bar Association. He was ordained a priest in the Congregation of Holy Cross in 2010.
Jim Ravelli was appointed chief information officer in August 2008 and vice president in 2010 overseeing Human Resources, Academic Technology, Technical Services, Web and Administrative Services, Facilities Planning and Construction, Physical Plant, and Master Planning.
The Office of Human Resources, supervised by Ravelli, is responsible for benefits, salary administration, and personnel regulations and hiring. Ravelli also works as the chief strategist and visionary for comprehensive information technology (IT) planning and implementation. He directs the University's academic and administrative computer, voice and data communications personnel, and is primarily responsible for leading the wide variety of campus technology users toward an environment that achieves the University's goals. Jim oversees Facilities Planning and Construction which is responsible for planning, design, and construction at the University of Portland and capital improvement services to all departments within the University community. He also oversees the Physical Plant, which is responsible for the management of University facilities including asset reinvestment, annual stewardship, and providing customer service, and Master Planning which works with the neighborhood association for development of the neighborhood and the river campus.
Ravelli has served as vice president, service delivery for EasyStreet Online Services, based in Beaverton; senior director, global IT Operations (acting CIO) for VMware in Palo Alto, Calif.; CIO and director of IT Infrastructure for Brocade Communications in San Jose, Calif.; and founder and president of Archinetix, Incorporated, based in Portland. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Arizona State University.
Timmins began working for AVI, a pioneering medical research company, in 1992 and was the company’s first chief financial officer before serving as president and COO from 2000 to 2008. Before his career with AVI BioPharma he worked as an auditor with PricewaterhouseCoopers. He is a 1981 graduate of the University of Portland and earned an MBA from Stanford University. In 2009, he was named one of the "Significant 75" alumni of the Pamplin School of Business Administration.
Timmins retired from AVI in 2008 and has since been active in the Portland community, serving on the board of directors at St. Mary’s Academy and at Yamhill Valley Vineyards. Timmins also worked with the University’s Entrepreneurial Scholars program, and taught classes in strategic thinking and financial statement analysis to MBA students at George Fox University.
The controller's office, including payroll and students accounts, reports to Timmins, as well as the bookstore.
Rev. Gary S. Chamberland, C.S.C., has served as director of campus ministry since 2009.
Prior to his current role at University of Portland, he had been a visiting instructor of theology at the University of Notre Dame. Additional service at Notre Dame includes his role in the faith formation staff in the Moreau Seminary, assistant director of campus ministry, and rector of Keenan Hall, a men’s residential dormitory. Chamberland served at Christ the King Parish in South Bend, Indiana, first as pastoral intern (1995-98), then as associate pastor (1998-99) following his first stint on The Bluff.
He taught theology courses at the University of Portland in 1993-94 while serving as its associate director of campus ministry. Prior to that, Chamberland taught grades six through eight at St. Philip Neri School while directing the parish’s RCIA program for adults in Alameda, Calif., from 1990-92.
He was ordained as a priest in the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1998. He earned a licentiate in canon law (JCL) from Catholic University of America, Wash., D.C.; a master of divinity degree at the Jesuit School of Theology in at Berkeley (Calif.); and a bachelor of arts degree in American studies at University of Notre Dame. He has been a member of the Canon Law Society of America since 2000.
A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Hermanny graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Notre Dame. After graduation, Hermanny taught kindergarten in Montana through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps.
Hermanny returned to Notre Dame and received her juris doctor cum laude. While at Notre Dame Law School, Hermanny served on the editorial board of the Journal of College and University Law, the only national law journal devoted exclusively to higher education law. In addition to her studies, Hermanny spent two years as the assistant rector of Ryan Hall.
Hermanny is a member of the Oregon State Bar and most recently worked at the Multnomah County office of Legal Aid Services of Oregon.
Laurie Kelley joined the University of Portland in 2006 and has served as associate vice president of University relations and chief marketing officer since 2012.
Kelley assists with leadership responsibilities for alumni relations, development and University events while also leading the University’s efforts in marketing and communications as well as the print shop and the university mail center.
Prior to coming to the University, Kelley served as vice president of marketing and planning at Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB). She holds an undergraduate degree in accounting and an MBA from the University of Notre Dame. She is on the CASE National Commission for Marketing and Communications, serves on the board of directors for the Children’s Cancer Association and the Blanchet House, and is chair of the Jesuit High School Communications Committee.
Kelley has been featured in Working Mother Magazine and written for the Portland Business Journal, Working Mother and University of Notre Dame’s online magazine. In 2011 she was the keynote speaker at the Oregon Women in Higher Education’s annual conference and was recognized by the Portland Business Journal as an Orchid Award Winner.
During his time with the WCC, Leykam oversaw the conference’s television partnerships, marketing, digital media initiatives, media relations, corporate sponsorships, branding, championships, and scheduling. Leykam served as the conference liaison to the head coaches for baseball and men’s and women’s soccer and played a key role in successful negotiations with ESPN that resulted in the highest rights fee and the most annual appearances in conference history.
Leykam graduated from Saint Mary’s College of California in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Prior to his career in collegiate athletics, Leykam served as a sports writer, section editor, and desk editor at the Contra Costa Times, Antioch Daily Ledger, Pittsburgh Post Dispatch, and Brentwood News. Leykam then worked as co-media relations director and then director of annual giving in the Stanford University athletic department, while also teaching a course in sports journalism at Saint Mary’s College. In his time with Stanford, Leykam oversaw a 222 percent increase in donations to the athletic department annual fund.
Leykam serves on the NCAA Championships and Sports Management Cabinet.
Sopko joined University of Portland following 14 years with Intel Corporation in Hillsboro where she most recently served as human resources manager in the Intel Digital Home Group where she was responsible for driving an organizational development plan and alignment of business strategy to a multi-year product roadmap. Prior to her position with the Digital Home Group, she held the HR manager position with the Intel Server Group and the Intel Capital Group. During her tenure at Intel, she also held positions in HR operation, HR information systems and corporate staffing.
Prior to joining Intel, Sopko worked for Hanna Anderson in Portland and Nike Inc. in Beaverton.
She holds a master’s degree in business administration from Marylhurst University in Lake Oswego, and a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. She is a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy in Portland.
