Shepard Freshman Resource Center: Academic Overview
College of Arts & Sciences Freshman SeminarYou must enroll in either CST 100 Communication and Leadership or ENG 112 Introduction to Literature, unless you are involved in the Honors Program. If you have AP/IB credit for literature, you should enroll in CST 100.
College, AP or IB CreditIf you have received college credit, AP or IB credit for a course, please send an official transcript or College Board report to the College of Arts and Sciences, so that the Dean may approve your request for credit.
Declared MajorIf you have decided to declare a particular major, and meet the prerequisites, you must fill out the form on the Registrar’s Office. You are not required to declare a major until you begin your junior year.
Foreign LanguageAll Bachelor of Arts students must complete four semesters (two-years) of a language. You may be exempted if you have taken four full-years in high school of the same language.
Honors ProgramIf you are participating in the Honors program, you should enroll in an honors course (designated 188 or 288).
MathIf you are enrolled in or planning to take a pre-calculus or calculus course, you can (and should) prepare yourself by reviewing these Calculus Links. By taking the tests and studying the reviews, you can ensure you are ready for your mathematics courses.
MusicIf you wish to take private music lessons, you should register for MUS 186. If you wish to play in an ensemble, you should register for that ensemble: Guitar Ensemble, Concert Band, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble. You may be required to audition for particular positions; please contact the department for more information. If you wish to take voice lessons, you must first enroll in MUS 235 (Group Voice); you may request an exception if you have taken lessons in the past. You may also register for one of two choirs: University Singers (by audition) or Choral Union. If you have specific questions about the ensembles, lessons, or choirs, please contact the Performing and Fine Arts Department at 503-943-7228.
NCAA SportsIf you are participating in NCAA sports, check that you are registered for HPE 108.
“R” and “U”“R” on your schedule designates Thursday. Therefore, if a class lists days as “TR,” the class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays. “U” on your schedule designates Sunday. Therefore, if a class lists days as “U,” the class meets on Sundays.
Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC)Army or Air Force ROTC students should register for (Army) MS 111, 121 & 131 or (Air Force) AS 101 & AS 111. If you have questions about the programs, you may contact Army ROTC at 503-943-7353 and Air Force ROTC 503-943-7216.
Professional School Future MajorsIf you are thinking about entering the Schools of Business, Education, Engineering, or Nursing, you should enroll in an “Introductory Course” in that school; i.e., Business, BUS 100; Education, EDU 150; Engineering, EGR 110; or Nursing, NRS 101. Contact the academic program counselor for your school with further questions.
Studies Abroad ProgramsIf you are planning during the next school year to study abroad in a country whose native language is not English, then you should enroll in a course covering the language of that country. If you have questions about the programs, please call 503-943-7857.
