Studies Abroad: Europe Summer - Academics
Curriculum:
Students must take both classes for 6 credits total:
POL/PCS 391 – Political Culture, Religion & Democratization in Central Europe — Dr. Gary Malecha, Director.
(Can count toward political science major or minor, as an upper-division course outside of a CAS major, or as a free elective. Not a University core course.)
THE/PCS 391 – The Church in Poland: Piety, Nation, and Resistance — Fr. Thomas Hosinski, C.S.C.
(University core course.)
Prerequisites:
Students must have completed the following courses prior to the summer of 2013 to be eligible:
THE 101 – Introduction to Religion and Theology
THE 205 – Biblical Tradition and Culture
Cost:
The program cost is $6,300. This cost includes tuition for six credit hours, housing, excursions, some meals on the excursions, admissions, and health insurance. The cost does not include airfare or most meals. Students live in residences with kitchens in Salzburg and Krakow.
Program Dates:
Students must arrive in Salzburg by 6 pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2013. Students will depart from the Krakow residence by 10 am on Thursday, August 1, 2013.
The Experience:
Students will spend 13 days in Salzburg, Austria, and then proceed by coach to Krakow, Poland, with stops in Vienna and Prague. Students will live in Krakow for 17 days. The group will also visit the Polish national religious center at Czestochowa and the concentration camp at Auschwitz (Oswiecim).
Living Quarters:
The University of Portland Center in Salzburg is a 15 minute walk from the city center and ten minutes from the central railway station. In Krakow students live in downtown student apartments. Kitchen facilities are available in Salzburg and Krakow.
