Study Abroad New Program Proposal | University of Portland

Study Abroad New Program Proposal

As of Spring 2024, UP promotes (& supports through the applicability of institutional aid) 11 different programs in 9 countries for a semester abroad (in addition to GE3, an Engineering exchange with placements across the globe), along with 3 standing summer programs and 4 faculty led programs traveling during the summer term. Of the current programs 70% are located in Western Europe, and 64% are taught in English, requiring no prior language study.

Understanding that there are more diverse international interests than have historically been represented via the existing Study Abroad program opportunities, particularly in the global south or Asia, CISGO and Study Abroad have developed a new Study Abroad Program Proposal process [link to form/website] designed to invite proposals for new study abroad opportunities.  This process falls within the Provost’s directive for CISGO to serve in an Academic Advisory capacity to Study Abroad, tasked with providing a holistic and longitudinal overview of Study Abroad Academic Programs.  While tasked with ensuring that existing programs continue to meet UP standards, they are also looking at addressing future interests and needs.

Part of any program approval, whether reviewing a new program proposal or assessing long standing programs, includes a multi-layered approach. First, the academic program and specific courses offered require endorsement and review by the relevant UP academic department.  Second, Study Abroad reviews the Program Coordination (student life, housing, risk management, etc.), along with, third, the fiscal viability within UP’s budget parameters.  Study Abroad will assist with the review and assessment process, make recommendations to CISGO, who will then make a final recommendation to the Office of the Provost.  If approved, Study Abroad will work to ensure that the proper procedures are followed to satisfy institutional, accreditation, and Department of Education compliance requirements.
