Financial aid is available for some, but not all study abroad programs.

• Students attending a U.P. or ILACA program may use Institutional, Federal, and State aid.
• Students attending an IES study abroad program may typically only use Federal and State aid such as SEOG, Pell, Perkins, Stafford loan, etc. and not Institutional (U.P.) grants.  However, students participating in an IES language-intensive semester program in Nantes or Paris and majoring in French Studies may utilize Institutional aid in addition to Federal and State funds.
• Students in any other study abroad program may only receive aid if they do a consortium agreement. Generally the Financial Aid department will only do this if the student is required to do that particular study abroad program and the University does not offer it. If the student is not required to do a study abroad program or did not get accepted to one of the U.P. programs, the Financial Aid department will not do a consortium agreement.
• The only type of aid given over the summer is Stafford or Unsubsidized Stafford loan, or PLUS loan.
• Talent awards require the approval of the awarding department (i.e. ROTC, Athletic, Drama, or Music scholarships).
• The department of Financial Aid does not award Federal Workstudy to any study abroad programs. There are 9 work positions in the academic year Salzburg program and they are awarded to the 9 students who have the highest need.
• The following programs are considered U.P. or ILACA programs and can use institutional, State, and Federal Aid (only loans are offered for summer programs). Summer: Chile, London Business, Morelia, Salzburg I & II, Tokyo, Australia. Fall: Granada (ILACA), London (ILACA), Salzburg, Australia, Rome. Spring: Granada (ILACA), London (ILACA), Salzburg, and Australia.
• The following programs are considered IES Programs and can use only Federal and State Aid: Dublin, London (IES), European Union (Freiburg), Madrid and Vienna. Programs in Paris and Nantes are also considered IES Programs so Federal and State aid will only be applied, unless the student is majoring in French Studies in which case Institutional aid will transfer.
• The following programs are examples of what are defined as “Other” programs and are not eligible for financial aid of any kind through the University of Portland: Florence (through Gonzaga), Semester at Sea (through University of Pittsburgh), or The School for Field Studies at Boston University.

Students can now view their accounts through their email. Go to https://pilots.up.edu and login. Click ‘Login to Self Services,' located in the upper right corner of the page. Then click on ‘Student Information.’ From there, click on ‘Student Records.' Then click on ‘Account Summary by Term.’ There will be a list of the student’s charges and payments for the semester.

The first two deposits are non-refundable; however, the $1000 is taken off of the total cost of the program. The final payment is the remaining tuition that is owed. Often loans and financial aid will cover much of this final payment. Students can check with financial aid and student accounts to see what their remaining balances will be after all of their scholarships and loans are applied.

Salzburg only: If the student is a student worker, he or she can also calculate his or her student worker money into his or her financial aid received total and thus pay the remaining balance. If students overpay on their accounts, they will have a balance on their accounts that will be available after the first two weeks of school.

Deposits should be sent directly to the Studies Abroad office with the student’s name, ID number, and the name of the program he or she will be attending all readable on the check. Pay to the order of “University of Portland.” Deposits are due throughout the semester and the due dates of the deposits are located in the contract.

It covers tuition, housing, meals (for programs that include them), some excursions, and insurance.
