Studies Abroad: Granada Semester Programs

Curriculum:

*ALL CLASSES TAUGHT IN SPANISH*

Fall (16 credits at the 300 or 400 level)

• 3-week language and grammar intensive course in September (3 credits)
• Spanish Culture and Civilization (4 credits) ** This course will fulfill a history core requirement.
• 3 additional courses (each worth 3 credits) including one or two Spanish grammar classes depending upon placement level

Spring (19 credits at the 400 level)

• 3-week language and grammar intensive course in January (3 credits)
• Speaking and Writing Skills (3 credits)
• Spanish Culture and Civilization (4 credits) ** This course will fulfill a history core requirement
• 3 additional courses of your choice (each worth 3 credits)

Prerequisite: SPN 301-302 or the equivalent. Students in the spring 2014 program must take at least 3 credits of upper-division Spanish in fall 2013. The standard for Spanish proficiency is higher for the spring program.

Cost:

The cost of the Granada programs is $24,795 for the fall semester and $25,695 for the spring semester which includes tuition, housing, most meals, excursions/admissions, and insurance. Institutional financial aid does transfer, except for work study.  The cost of the programdoes not include airfare.

Program Dates:

Fall semester will begin at the end of August 2013 and conclude in mid-December 2013. The spring semester runs from the beginning of January 2014 to the end of May 2014. Specific dates will be announced in March 2013 (for fall). 

The Experience:

Both programs will allow students to have a first-hand look at Spanish culture. Programs include excursions to Madrid, Toledo, and Segovia to explore the rich, cultural, historic areas. Other excursions, such as those to Andalucía, the southernmost part of Spain, will be determined at the beginning of the semester.  The fall program works well for students at the 300 or 400 level. The spring program works best for students who are ready to take all classes at the advanced (400) level. All students prepare for the DELE (Spanish government-sponsored proficiency exam). The spring program is longer than the fall program.

Living Quarters:

Students will live with Spanish families, allowing full immersion into the culture and language. 

Note: 

All students applying for the Granada fall program are not allowed to make any summer plans to travel outside of the country because the visa process takes up to eight weeks to get passports back from the Spanish Consul. The passports are turned into the consul in late May, so please do not make any travel plans for the summer to be out of the USA.
