Lizz Schallert

Lizz SchallertLizz Schallert, an educator, therapist, and community organizer, has lived in Portland for the last seven years and hails from the Midwest. They are coming to UP from Cuernavaca, México, having served as the visiting social work professor with Augsburg University's Center for Global Education and Experience since 2018. Lizz is a licensed clinical social worker and provides mental health services primarily to low-income members of the LGBTQ+ community. They earned their master of social work with a concentration in international community development from Monmouth University in 2010. Lizz previously served as assistant professor of social work at George Fox University. Their primary areas of teaching and practice are in field education, social policy, macro/community practice, peacemaking and social change, social justice, and human rights. Over the last ten years, Lizz has facilitated and implemented a wide variety of community-based projects, including a trauma support program in a county jail, a circle of care therapist network for activists doing international human rights work, a food stamp program for farmers’ markets, cross-border solidarity campaigns, participatory action research with college students, and direct action campaigns focused on workers’ rights and racial justice. When they aren't teaching or at organizing meetings, you can find Lizz tending their garden, in the kitchen with their family, or cuddling with their cat.
