Courtney Ngai, Ph.D.

Instructor, Chemistry and Biochemistry

Courtney Ngai received her Ph.D. and M.S. in organic chemistry from the University of California, Riverside (UCR), and her B.S. in pharmaceutical chemistry from UC Davis. At UCR, she synthesized molecular cages that facilitate chemical reactions not typically possible with other small molecules. Before graduate school, she worked at Monsanto, supporting vegetable quality research and seed health through analytical chemistry and microbiology. Courtney has taught at UCR, the Arizona College of Nursing, Washington State University, and Clackamas Community College. She taught multiple subjects, including chemistry, biology, and microbiology. Her passion for teaching drives her to constantly improve her lesson plans. She strives to inspire enthusiasm for learning and encourages students to reach their full potential—just as her own undergraduate instructors inspired her. In the classroom, Courtney emphasizes meaningful learning, equity, and student success through collaborative work and inclusive teaching strategies. She finds it deeply rewarding to watch students grow in resilience, curiosity, and confidence. Her favorite courses to teach are lab-based, where students apply classroom concepts through hands-on experimentation and discovery. She is drawn to UP’s commitment to faith, service, and the development of the whole person through community engagement, ethical leadership, and a strong emphasis on social responsibility and personal growth. Outside of teaching, Courtney enjoys spending time with her family, taking long walks with her dogs, and volunteering in her community. She is excited to join the UP community and looks forward to mentoring and supporting students on campus.
