Dr. Kate Patterson is a licensed naturopathic physician, educator, and advocate whose work integrates clinical medicine, public health, and trauma-informed care. In addition to her service at the University of Portland, she serves as adjunct faculty at the OHSU-PSU School of Public Health and the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM), where she teaches courses in chronic and communicable disease, mind-body health, integrative public health, and health promotion. Since 2011, Kate has held a core faculty appointment at NUNM, teaching across the basic and clinical sciences and mentoring students and residents. As an attending physician at NUNM Health Centers, she provides direct patient care and has supervised student clinicians at multiple community clinics in Portland. She currently sees patients at Rose Haven, a day shelter for women, children, and marginalized genders. Her teaching and clinical work emphasize equity, interdisciplinary care, and holistic health. A leader in academic service, Kate has chaired faculty senate, curriculum review, faculty development initiatives, and directed community engagement programs that connect students with local partners addressing social determinants of health. Her conference presentations and public speaking engagements have addressed topics ranging from nutritional equity to integrated models of care. Trained as a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, Sexual Assault Victim Advocate, and Title IX Campus Advocate, she also supports survivors of gender-based violence through advocacy, forensic training, and trauma-informed healthcare. Kate is excited to join the University of Portland community of educators and students. You might spot her in the bleachers on game day or attending a guest lecture or musical performance. She lives with her family, along with their dog, cat, and a couple of chickens.
