Required Trainings

If your research involves any of the following, you are required to complete the CITI Program training courses Introduction to Biosafety before submitting the IBC Application for Work with Biological Agents:

  • Human or non-human primate tissue, blood, body fluids, or primary culture (blood borne pathogens)
  • Wild-caught or random source animals or animal tissues, blood, body fluids, or primary culture that may carry zoonotic disease
  • Infectious Agents (RG2 and above, RG1 with RG2+ genes.) The NIH Guidelines defines:
    •  Risk Group 1 (RG1) as agents that are not associated with disease in healthy adult humans. This group includes a list of animal viral etiologic agents in common use. These agents represent no or little risk to an individual and no or little risk to the community.
    • Risk Group 2 (RG2) as agents that are associated with human disease which is rarely serious and for which preventive or therapeutic interventions are often available. These agents represent a moderate risk to an individual but a low risk to the community.
    • Risk Group 3 (RG3) as agents that are associated with serious or lethal human disease for which preventive or therapeutic interventions may be available. These agents represent a high risk to an individual but a low risk to the community.
    • Risk Group 4 (RG4) as agents that are likely to cause serious or lethal human disease for which preventive or therapeutic interventions are not usually available. These agents represent a high risk to the individual and a high risk to the community.
  • Recombinant or synthetic DNA/RNA in organisms/cells/viruses
  • Transgenic plants
  • Cell lines (RG2 and above.)

In addition, if your research involves:

  • Human or non-human primate tissue, blood, body fluids, or primary culture or wild-caught or random source animals or animal tissues, blood, body fluids, or primary culture that may carry zoonotic disease, you are required to complete the CITI Program training course OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens.
  • Infectious agents (RG2 and above, RG1 with RG2+ genes), you are required to complete the CITI Program training module Laboratory Acquired Infections. This training requirement may be fulfilled by successful completion of a comparable training course that provides information equivalent to the CITI Program training module. Equivalent trainings include those made available by Oregon Health & Science University. Please contact IBC@up.edu to verify if a training fulfills this requirement.
  • Recombinant and synthetic DNA/RNA in organisms/cells/viruses, you are required to complete the CITI Program training module NIH Guidelines for Research.
  • Animals infected with infectious agents (RG2 and above or RG1 with RG2+ genes), you are required to complete the CITI Program training module Animal Biosafety. This training requirement may be fulfilled by successful completion of a comparable training course that provides information equivalent to the CITI Program training module. Equivalent trainings include those made available by Oregon Health & Science University. Please contact IBC@up.edu to verify if a training fulfills this requirement.

The principal investigator is responsible for ensuring that all people, including undergraduates, who will work on research projects submitted to the IBC will complete the applicable required training.
