Orientation Begins for New Students

 

Thursday, August 24

9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. - Orientation Headquarters Open, Clark Library Patio. UP.

Your first stop when you arrive to campus as a commuter student! Residential students are welcome to drop by after they move in to their residence hall.  Orientation headquarters services to help all new students and family members build a sense of community on campus by providing information, resources, and free materials you will need for Orientation Weekend. 

9:00 a.m. - Residence Halls Open, Residence Hall QuadsUP.

If you are living on campus, go directly to your residence hall to check in. Hall staff and returning students will meet you there, issue you a key and nametag and show you to your room, where you can unpack, meet your roommates, and get settled. Once you're settled, be sure to stop by the Orientation Headquarters to receive useful information.

Move in time is based on room assignment. If your room assignment is even, you can move in between 9 am - 12 pm. If your assignment is odd, 12 pm - 3 pm.

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. - Pilot Family Hospitality Tent, Pilot House Patio, P.

Located next to the UP Bookstore, Alumni & Parent Relations will be hosting a comfortable place to drop by, have snacks, pick up some UP swag and meet other families.

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. - Student ID Card Creation. Dundon Berchtold 101 (Franz Lounge). U.

If you have not picked up your Student ID Card yet, there will be staff from Campus Safety in the Franz Lounge to get your ID created.

1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. - Drop-in Hours for Academic Program Counselors. UP.

If you are majoring in Education, come and complete the background clearance process needed to participate in your required Field Experience for Fall Semester.  Staff will be available to assist you.  Please bring a laptop.

The following departments will hold open houses for new students and their families:

  • Air Force ROTC, Kenna Hall Basement.
  • Campus Ministry, Chapel of Christ the Teacher.
    • Our Campus Ministry staff is eager to meet you – learn about ways to stay connected to your faith on campus and in Portland. We’ll share information about upcoming retreats, as well as where to find Mass and the sacraments in the UP community! Outside the chapel, explore the Marian Garden at your own pace, or bring a prayer intention to the Candle Grotto.

  • Career Education Center, Franz 110.
    • The Career Education Center is for all students including first years. Meet the team that will help you choose and/or change a major, apply for on-campus jobs and navigate the internship search process. We are excited to support you in your career journey.
  • Clark Library, Clark Library
    • Take a short tour, get library stickers and other goodies, chat with library staff and student employees, and browse a special exhibit from the University Museum. The library is a popular place on campus for students to study, meet with groups, borrow laptops, get research help, create videos and podcasts, and find quality information for academic assignments. We look forward to meeting you!
  • Moreau Center, St Mary's Student Center.
    • The Moreau Center for Service and Justice’s mission moves us towards advocating for Social Justice, building Community, and standing firm in our Solidarity with underserved and historically silenced populations. We engage in deep Reflection and develop personal and communal commitments towards bettering a world in need. Stop by St. Mary’s Student Center to chat with staff or find us on Instagram @moreaucenter and learn about opportunities to engage with us!

  • Residence Life, Tyson 123.
    • Get to know your Residence Life team by visiting their central office.
  • Student Health Center and Counseling Center, Orrico Hall Upper Level.
    • Take a tour of the on-campus clinic and chat with our primary care and mental health clinicians. The Student Health Center provides primary care services including evaluation and treatment of illnesses and injuries, preventative care, and health education. The Counseling Center offers confidential mental health evaluations and support including consultations, follow-up counseling sessions, and group workshops. Our staff is excited to support you in your health journey!

  • Study Abroad, Buckley 114.
    • Interested in spending a semester or summer abroad while earning UP credit? Come stop by our office, explore up.edu/studyabroad to explore program options, and find us on Instagram @UPStudyAbroad. Applications to study abroad in Summer '24, Fall '24 and Spring '25 are due on November 27th 

2:00 p.m. - New Student Athlete and Parent Meeting. Bauccio Commons Dining RoomUP.

Parents of new student athletes will meet with coaches and staff, and hear brief presentations about the athletic program, including information on academic advising, NCAA compliance, athletic training, physical health, and other initiatives.

3:30 p.m. - Residence Hall Meeting for Resident Students. Various Residence HallsU.

This will be the first opportunity for residents to meet with hall staff and other new residents in the hall. Your hall staff will provide more details upon arrival.

3:30 p.m. - Commuter Students Meeting. St Mary's LoungeU.

4:30 p.m. - Meeting for Parents of New Resident Students, Residence Hall LoungesP.

Parents of new resident students will meet with the hall staff and pastoral resident to learn about life in the residence hall. Topics will include navigating hall life, coping with homesickness, community standards, and hall policies.

4:30 p.m. - Meetings for Parents of New Commuter Students. Shiley 301P.

Parents of new commuter students will meet to learn about life on campus as a commuter student.

4:30 p.m. - Navigating the Meal Plan. Commons and Pilot House OpenU.

It is important that all students eat dinner before evening activities begin at 6:00 p.m. 

5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Parent and Family BBQ Dinner. Bauccio Commons Dining Room and Bluff LawnP.

After a busy day, parents, siblings and other family support members are invited to join the Office of Alumni & Parent Relations for a BBQ dinner as they welcome you to campus and provide an opportunity for you to connect with other Pilot parents and University staff.

6:00 p.m. - All Aboard (New Student Mixer). Etzel FieldU.

This first social event for new students at UP is designed to help you meet and interact with the class of 2027. Dress in something comfortable as you will be moving around!  When you look back on your first four days at UP, you will definitely think of this as one of the highlights! You will also learn from student leaders about the variety of extracurricular activities and opportunities for student involvement beyond the classroom.

7:00 p.m. - Women's Soccer Game vs. Washington State Cougars. Merlo FieldUP.

Tickets for orientation weekend can be purchased at: www.portlandpilots.com/orientation
You will receive a ticket for both Thursday & Friday. Attend both games or just one game during the weekend. Student ID cards will serve as their tickets.  Students can also sign up for Purple Pride at the games.

Each quad will host a series of fun activities that will be sure to help you feel like a welcome addition to the community.

9:00 p.m. - Commuter Student Social. St Mary's Lounge. U.

Come meet and spend time with fellow commuter students. Learn about comfortable and convenient places on campus to gather with friends or study in between classes. Refreshments will be provided.

 

Friday, August 25

8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. - Orientation Headquarters Open, Clark Library PatioUP.

If you haven’t already, check in at Orientation Headquarters to receive your Orientation materials. Orientation Assistants will be available to answer questions and guide you in the right direction.

8:30 a.m. - Complimentary Coffee Service. Chiles Center PlazaUP.

 Join us for complimentary coffee before you attend the President's Welcome!

9:00 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. - President's WelcomeChiles Center Arena. UP.

The President’s Welcome officially opens Orientation Weekend. This is a highlight of Orientation weekend that you and your parents won't want to miss. You'll be introduced to a host of university officials, meet university president Dr Robert Kelly, and learn more about the University's mission of Teaching and Learning, Faith and Formation, Service and Leadership.

10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. - Anchoring Families to UPChiles Center ArenaP.

This presentation will address key areas of student development in which both parents and the University can work together for each student’s success.

10:00 a.m. - Anchor Workshop #1 (Introductions). Assigned ClassroomsU.

Anchor workshops, one part to the Anchor, have approximately 20-25 first year students and will meet eight times throughout the weekend.  The first meeting will be an opportunity to get acquainted with peers, discuss the purpose of orientation and what to expect, and to answer questions.  Attendance at orientation Anchor sessions will be part of the attendance grade for the seminar class during the semester.

10:00 a.m. - Transfer Student Orientation #1. Assigned Classrooms. U.

Transfer students will meet together independently from first-year students to learn about the University and resources available. 

11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Complimentary Boxed Lunch. Academic Quad. UP.

Stop by and enjoy this "grab-and-go" complimentary lunch.

11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Wellness Fair. Academic Quad. UP.

Here at UP, we want you to know that you are more than the grade you get on an exam. We value the whole person, and we encourage you to take care of all the dimensions of your health and wellness. Start the year strong and join us to learn more about wellness resources and learn about a few ways to reduce your stress and take care of yourself. We’ll have lots of free food, games, and fun! 

1:30 p.m. - We are a Community Against Violence: Preventing violence one Green Dot at a time. Chiles Center Arena. U.

The University of Portland is committed to preventing interpersonal violence including: stalking, dating violence, and sexual assault. Green Dot is a strategy that gives every one of us the opportunity to do our part. As active bystanders, we have the power to prevent others from being hurt and to proactively create a culture that does not tolerate violence. Join us and learn what you can do. All new students are expected to attend this program.

  • Understanding Your Student's Academic Experience. Mago Hunt Theater
    • Even the strongest high school students typically experience some challenges during their freshman year of college. Representatives from SARC will discuss common academic issues and the resources the University provides to assist students.
  • Opportunities for Faith, Formation, and Service. Dundon Berchtold 004 (Brian Doyle Auditorium).
    • Rooted in Catholic and Holy Cross traditions, Campus Ministry fosters the spiritual development of students of all faiths. Come learn about the many ways for students to grow in their faith!
  • Study Abroad. Buckley Center Auditorium.
    • Join us to learn about study abroad at UP, and what the process would look like for your student. Applications for 2024-2025 study abroad programs are due November 27th, 2023.

2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. - Optional Sessions. UP.

  • What you need to know about calculus at UP. Buckley Center Auditorium.
    • In this session, Dr Carolyn James will share tips and insights about Calculus, then a panel of current students will share their experiences and answer questions. We want all Calculus students to be successful, so join us to find out how!
  • Writing @UP: How college writing is different from high school writing. Mago Hunt Theater.
    • In this session on college writing, we'll discuss some important ways that writing in college differs from the writing you did in high school. We'll also address some tips on the writing and research process, point you towards essential resources for writing on campus like the Writing Center, and discuss academic integrity and AI. Writing is essential for learning in college: this session will get you started on the right foot! Led by Dr Sarah Weiger, Associate Professor of English and Director of the Integrated Writing Program.
  • What to expect from your physics class. Dundon Berchtold 031.
    • The goal of this session is to hear from Physics majors and students that have successfully completed their introductory physics courses. The students will share helpful advice about how to get the most out of your physics experience. They will also give some advice to future students interested in joining a research team on campus.
  • Every Pilot needs a Co-Pilot: How to work with a peer tutor in the Learning Commons. Dundon Berchtold 136.
    • Learn about peer tutoring services at the University of Portland! The Learning Commons offers tutoring services in a variety of subjects and formats to help students improve their academic skills and learning strategies while better understanding course content. In this session, we will discuss the different opportunities UP students have to work with their peers in the Learning Commons.

    • Interested in Law School? Prelaw Advisor Professor Bill Curtis will discuss prelaw programming at UP.

4:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. - Bite on the Bluff. Chiles Center Plaza. UP.

The annual Bite on The Bluff is coming back to UP! This year’s event is our 15th anniversary!  The event is a food festival featuring some of Portland’s best food trucks, like Voodoo Doughnut, Koi Fusion and Killer Burger. All hosted in our Chiles Center Plaza before the men's soccer match at 7pm. Vendors will accept debit/credit cards or cash.  During Bite on the Bluff, the UP Bookstore will be providing a special VIP event with discounted pricing on popular UP logo merchandise and more.  Stop by to pick up your game day gear!

7:00 p.m. - Men's Soccer Game vs. Sacramento State Hornets. Merlo Field. UP.

This engaging presentation will highlight the diversity of our institution and how we can all come together, sharing our full selves, with our multitude of identities to create an inclusive and productive academic community.

10:00 a.m. - Academic Meetings by Major. UP.

    • All new undergraduate students majoring in business are expected to attend this special academic Orientation session. After a welcome by the dean, students will receive an introduction to academic advising in the school.
  • School of Education. Franz 120.
    • All new undergraduate students majoring in education are expected to attend this special Orientation session. After a brief overview from the dean, you will meet your advisor and the instructors of your education classes this semester. You will also have a chance to meet new classmates, share schedules, and make plans for study groups. You will learn important details about getting to your field experience since you will be going into K-12 classrooms next week.
  • School of Nursing & Health Innovations. Chiles Center Arena.
    • All new students in the School of Nursing & Health Innovations are expected to attend this special Orientation session. After a welcome by the dean, the academic advising system will be discussed. Students will then break out into sub-groups and meet with their academic advisors, each of whom is a full-time faculty member. Students will have an opportunity to discuss their fall class schedule and future clinical experiences.
  • Shiley School of Engineering. Buckley Center Auditorium.
    • All new undergraduate students majoring in engineering and computer science are expected to attend this session. After an introduction from the Dean, the students and families will meet their professional advisors and Associate Dean.  Topics will include – four year overview, strategies, policy basics, etc.

11:30 a.m. - Lunch (on your own). Multiple LocationsUP.

Lunch is available in these locations: The Bauccio Commons, the tent in the Academic Quad and the Pilot House. Each space will have a small selection of lunch items.   • Understanding Student Safety, Community Standards, and Violence Prevention. Bauccio Commons Dining Room
    • The University is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students. This session will give a brief overview from the Department of Campus Safety, Community Standards, and the Title IX Office.
  • Navigating Transitions, Buckley Center Auditorium.
    • Going away to college will often create a sense of uncertainty for your student as their current relationships evolve and new relationships form. This ambiguity brings up a wide range of emotions and different students cope with transitions in a variety of ways. This session will explore ways for parents and family members to navigate the transition from high school to college successfully with their student.

  • Student Engagement in Extracurricular Activities. Buckley Center Auditorium.
    • Meet with representatives from Student Activities, Recreational Services, Residence Life, and the Moreau Center as they describe the positive ways you student can fully engage in their educational experience.
  • Student Health Center. Bauccio Commons Dining Room.
    • Clinicians from the Student Health Center will answer questions regarding medical services provided to students at UP.

  • Counseling Services and Wellness Programing. Dundon Berchtold 004 (Brian Doyle Auditorium).
    • Clinicians from the Counseling Center will answer questions regarding mental health services and programs provided to students at UP.

4:00 p.m. - Closing Ceremonies and Orientation Mass (all faiths welcome). Chiles Center Arena. UP.

The Orientation Mass celebrates the arrival of our new students on the Bluff and blesses them as they begin their academic journey.  All are welcome to help us pray with these students, their families, friends, and loved ones, as we welcome them into our UP community. All faith traditions and backgrounds are most welcome to join us! Doors open at 4:00 p.m., Celebration begins at 4:30 p.m.

5:30 p.m. - Dinner on your Own and Farewell to Parents and Family Members. UP.

8:30 p.m. - Play It UP (Student Engagement Activity). Resident Students begin in Resident Halls, Commuter Students begin in St Mary's LoungeU.

 Enjoy time with your classmates in teams working together all across campus to solve puzzles in The Great Game!

  • Auditions for the semester's theatre productions are held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings of the second week of classes (September 5-7).  All UP students are invited to audition, and anyone wishing to be in a play that semester must audition Tuesday evening, September 5. Students will check-in with their Anchor workshop to debrief the day and prepare for the Can I Kiss You? presentation.

4:30 p.m. - Can I Kiss You? Chiles Center Arena. U.

Since you come to the Bluff from different experiences and backgrounds, UP wants to be sure all students understand consent. Consent is fundamental to relationships not only while you are a Pilot, but as you move into the world after UP. This program, Can I Kiss You?, provides an interactive approach to discussing the importance of consent, its definition, and how to obtain consent from another person.

5:30 p.m. - Commuter Student Picnic. Chiles Center Mezzanine. U.

Spend time getting to know fellow commuter students. Dinner will be provided.

8:30 p.m. - Bell Tower Ceremony. Bell Tower PlazaU.

Orientation Weekend culminates in a ceremony at the iconic Bell Tower. All new students are invited to gather together for this special tradition. The candle light ceremony will include a celebratory peal of the bells and the singing of the University’s alma mater.

Monday, August 28
