Thursday, August 22

10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. - Orientation Headquarters Open, Clark Library Patio. UP.

Your first stop when you arrive to campus as a commuter student! Residential students are welcome to drop by after they move in to their residence hall.  Orientation headquarters services to help all new students and family members build a sense of community on campus by providing information, resources, and free materials you will need for Orientation Weekend. 

10:00 am – 4:00 pm – Pilot Family Hospitality Tent Open, Pilot House Patio, UP.

Take a break from move-in and visit our tent by the Bookstore for snacks and cool UP swag. Ham it up at our photo wall, pick up helpful information, and take a moment to write a note of encouragement to your new student that we’ll deliver at a later date. Our Parent & Family Engagement team will be on hand to answer your questions about what to expect as our newest members of the Pilot family. We can’t wait to meet you!

11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. - Residence Halls Open, Residence Hall QuadsUP.

If you are living on campus, go directly to your residence hall to check in. Hall staff and returning students will meet you there, issue you a key and nametag and show you to your room, where you can unpack, meet your roommates, and get settled. Once you're settled, be sure to stop by the Orientation Headquarters to receive useful information.

1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. - Complete Field Experience Paperwork (for Education Majors only). Franz 426. U.

3:00 p.m. - New Student Athlete and Parent Meeting. Bauccio Commons Dining RoomUP.

Parents of new student athletes will meet with coaches and staff, and hear brief presentations about the athletic program, including information on academic advising, NCAA compliance, athletic training, physical health, and other initiatives.

4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. - Dinner Break, Navigating the Meal Plan. Commons and Pilot House Open. UP.

It is important that all students eat dinner before evening activities begin. 

5:30 p.m. - Commuter Student Meeting & Social. Begin in Franz 120, end in St Mary's Lounge. UP.

Come meet and spend time with fellow commuter students. Learn about comfortable and convenient places on campus to gather with friends or study in between classes. Refreshments will be provided.

6:30 p.m. - Residence Hall Meetings. Various Residence HallsUP.

This will be the first opportunity for residents to meet with hall staff and other new residents in the hall. Your hall staff will provide more details upon arrival.

7:00 p.m. Parent and Family Dessert Social. Bauccio Commons Dining Room and Bluff LawnP.

After a busy day, parents, siblings and other family support members are invited to join University Relations for appetizers, desserts and adult beverages to celebrate a successful move-in day! Here’s another great opportunity to connect with fellow Pilot parents, faculty and staff.

7:30 p.m. - All Aboard (New Student Mixer). Etzel FieldU.

This first social event for new students at UP is designed to help you meet and interact with the class of 2028. Dress in something comfortable as you will be moving around!  When you look back on your first four days at UP, you will definitely think of this as one of the highlights! You will also learn from student leaders about the variety of extracurricular activities and opportunities for student involvement beyond the classroom.

Each quad will host a series of fun activities that will be sure to help you feel like a welcome addition to the community.

 

Friday, August 23

8:30 a.m. - Orientation Headquarters Open, Clark Library PatioUP.

If you haven’t already, check in at Orientation Headquarters to receive your Orientation materials. Orientation Assistants will be available to answer questions and guide you in the right direction.

9:00 a.m. - Complimentary Coffee Service. Chiles Center PlazaUP.

 Join us for complimentary coffee before you attend the President's Welcome!

9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. - President's WelcomeChiles Center Arena. UP.

The President’s Welcome officially opens Orientation Weekend. This is a highlight of Orientation weekend that you and your parents won't want to miss. You'll be introduced to a host of university officials, meet university president Dr Robert Kelly, and learn more about the University's mission of Teaching and Learning, Faith and Formation, Service and Leadership.

10:30 a.m. - Anchoring Families to UP. Chiles Center ArenaP.

This presentation will address key areas of student development in which both parents and the University can work together for each student’s success.

10:30 a.m. - Anchor Workshop #1 (Introductions). Assigned ClassroomsU.

Anchor Workshops, one part to the Anchor, have approximately 20-25 first year students and will meet eight times throughout the weekend.  The first meeting will be an opportunity to get acquainted with peers, discuss the purpose of orientation and what to expect, and to answer questions.  Attendance at orientation Anchor sessions will be part of the attendance grade for the seminar class during the semester.

10:30 a.m. - Transfer Student Orientation #1. Assigned Classrooms. U.

Transfer students will meet together independently from first-year students to learn about the University and resources available. 

11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Complimentary Boxed Lunch. Academic Quad. UP.

Stop by and enjoy this "grab-and-go" complimentary lunch.

11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Wellness Fair. Academic Quad. UP.

Here at UP, we want you to know that you are more than the grade you get on an exam. We value the whole person, and we encourage you to take care of all the dimensions of your health and wellness. Start the year strong and join us to learn more about wellness resources and learn about a few ways to reduce your stress and take care of yourself. We’ll have lots of free food, games, and fun!

    • Our on-campus medical center offers a range of services to support your student’s physical and mental health. Find out how we manage primary care, urgent care, prescriptions, specialist referrals, and more.

4:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. - Bite on the Bluff. Chiles Center Plaza. UP.

The annual Bite on The Bluff is coming back to UP! This year’s event is our 16th anniversary!  The event is a food festival featuring some of Portland’s best food trucks. All hosted in our Chiles Center Plaza before the men's soccer match at 7pm. Vendors will accept debit/credit cards or cash.  During Bite on the Bluff, the UP Bookstore will be providing a special VIP event with discounted pricing on popular UP logo merchandise and more.  Stop by to pick up your game day gear!

Saturday, August 24

10:00 a.m. - Academic Meetings by Major. UP. 

  • College of Arts and Sciences, Humanities. Shiley 301.

  • College of Arts and Sciences, Social Sciences. Dundon Berchtold 004 (Brian Doyle Auditorium).
  • College of Arts and Sciences, Undeclared. Mago Hunt Recital Hall.
  • Pamplin School of Business. Bauccio Commons Dining Room.
    • All new undergraduate students majoring in business are expected to attend this special academic Orientation session. After a welcome by the dean, students will receive an introduction to academic advising in the school.
  • School of Education. Franz 120.
    • All new undergraduate students majoring in education are expected to attend this special Orientation session. After a brief overview from the dean, you will meet your advisor and the instructors of your education classes this semester. You will also have a chance to meet new classmates, share schedules, and make plans for study groups. You will learn important details about getting to your field experience since you will be going into K-12 classrooms next week.
  • School of Nursing & Health Innovations. Chiles Center Arena.
    • All new students in the School of Nursing & Health Innovations are expected to attend this special Orientation session. After a welcome by the dean, the academic advising system will be discussed. Students will then break out into sub-groups and meet with their academic advisors, each of whom is a full-time faculty member. Students will have an opportunity to discuss their fall class schedule and future clinical experiences.
  • Shiley School of Engineering. Buckley Center Auditorium.
    • All new undergraduate students majoring in engineering and computer science are expected to attend this session. After an introduction from the Dean, the students and families will meet their professional advisors and Associate Dean.  Topics will include – four year overview, strategies, policy basics, etc.

11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. - Lunch (on your own). UP.

Lunch is available in these locations: The Bauccio Commons, the tent in the Academic Quad and the Pilot House. Each space will have a small selection of lunch items. Please look for the QR code to scan and view the menu for each location. For a list of student recommended local restaurants, please stop by Orientation Headquarters located at the Clark Library Patio.

    • Study Abroad Program Coordinator Holly Peterson will take you on an exploration of UP’s diverse and longstanding study abroad programs, and the necessary steps for your student to participate in this transformational opportunity.

4:00 p.m. - Can I Kiss You? Chiles Center Arena. U.

Since you come to the Bluff from different experiences and backgrounds, UP wants to be sure all students understand consent. Consent is fundamental to relationships not only while you are a Pilot, but as you move into the world after UP. This program, Can I Kiss You?, provides an interactive approach to discussing the importance of consent, its definition, and how to obtain consent from another person.

    • Director of Campus Ministry Fr. Peter Walsh, C.S.C., will share the many ways students of all faiths can enrich their college experience with UP’s mission in mind.

5:30 p.m. - Closing Ceremonies and Catholic Mass (all faiths welcome). Chapel of Christ the Teacher. UP.

The Orientation Mass celebrates the arrival of our new students on the Bluff and blesses them as they begin their academic journey.  All are welcome to help us pray with these students, their families, friends, and loved ones, as we welcome them into our UP community. All faith traditions and backgrounds are most welcome to join us!

6:45 p.m. - Bell Tower Ceremony. Bell Tower PlazaUP.

Orientation Programming culminates in a ceremony at the iconic Bell Tower. All new students are invited to gather together for this special tradition. The ceremony will include a celebratory peal of the bells and the singing of the University’s alma mater.

7:00 p.m. - Dinner on your Own and Farewell to Parents and Family Members. UP.

9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. - Pilots After Dark Preview (Karaoke Night!). Pilot House. U.
