Inauguration FAQs

Universities have a long-standing tradition of holding inauguration ceremonies for their new presidents. Inaugurations accomplish several goals, including providing the institution an opportunity to reaffirm historic commitments, introducing the community (campus, local, academic) to the new president, and providing institutional visibility.

The Inauguration will take place on Friday, September 23, 2022. The schedule of events that day is as follows:

11:00 a.m.               Inauguration Mass, Chiles Center
12:30 p.m.
Inauguration Luncheon, Academic Quad (Invitation Required)
12:30 - 2:00 p.m.
     Campus Tours, Franz Hall Patio
3:15 p.m.
                 Inauguration Ceremony, Chiles Center
8:30 p.m.
Inauguration Dance, Academic Quad

All faculty, staff, students, alumni, and members of the University community are welcome to attend the Inauguration Mass, Ceremony, and Dance. Registration is now closed but the public is welcome to attend the Inauguration Ceremony, Dance, Mass, and Campus tours as space allows.

Yes, the deadline is September 9, 2022 for the Inauguration Mass & Inauguration Ceremony.

No.

A University President’s inauguration is a festive, solemn event that warrants attire similar to that worn for a graduation or commencement ceremony; e.g., business casual attire is appropriate. Faculty and many others will be wearing academic regalia for the procession during the event.

Students living in the residence halls or on athletics teams may want to coordinate to wear t-shirts that identify them as members thereof. If you are attending the Inauguration Dance in the evening, please wear dance-appropriate attire.

You can bring as many guests as you like. The capacity for the Inauguration Dance is 1,000 so it may be the case that space is limited for that event.

Yes. Please register them in the number of guests who will be attending.

All classes will be suspended at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, September 23, so that all may participate in the Inauguration events (see schedule above) that day.

Some campus offices may be closed at different times on Friday, September 23 to accommodate employees who wish to attend the Inauguration events; this will especially be the case for staff attending the Inauguration Mass (10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m.) and the Inauguration Ceremony (after 3 p.m.). We thank you for your understanding if a campus office that you visit that day is closed.

Staff should check with their supervisor who will offer guidance on attending Inauguration events during work hours; this guidance will be largely based on the University’s operational needs. If a supervisor grants approval for a staff member to attend an Inauguration event(s), the employee will record regular work time for the time of attendance.

Please write to inauguration@up.edu

Seating will be made available on a first come, first served basis.
