Writing the Jerusalem Pilgrimage

Presented by Dr. Mary Boyle, 2/1/2022

What did it mean to take part in the Jerusalem pilgrimage at the end of the Middle Ages? It was a journey which took place not only in the physical world, but also in the mind and on the page. Dr. Boyle explores how four pilgrim authors navigated the collision between the multi-religious reality of fifteenth-century Jerusalem and the unchanging and idealized holy city which existed only in writing.

Mary Boyle is a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow and Junior Research Fellow at Linacre College, Oxford, where she is researching the translation and adaptation of medieval English and German literature during the nineteenth century. She is the author of ‘Writing the Jerusalem Pilgrimage in the Late Middle Ages’ (D.S. Brewer, 2021).
