Things Every New Pilot Should Know

University of Portland offers a lot more to our students than just classes. Here are campus resources that every Pilot should know about!

Food Service

Did you know that UP’s food service company was founded by a UP alumnus? Bon Appétit Management Co., founded by Fedele Bauccio ’64,’66 MBA, serves delicious meals and tasty treats all across campus. Meal points, cash, and credit/debit cards can all be used to purchase food on campus.

Bon Appétit believes in serving only the freshest food, prepared from scratch and using authentic ingredients. Bon Appétit also strongly believes in food that is created in a socially responsible manner, and has pledged to take a stand on many issues surrounding our food supply — from choosing organic and local food sources to helping ensure responsible working and environmental conditions from food providers. Fun fact: UP is the first University in the country to ban plastic straws.

Shepard Academic Resource Center

The Shepard Academic Resource Center is a resource and partner for academic needs beyond the classroom.

Some of the services provided by the Shepard Academic Resource Center:

• Learning Commons connects students with peer tutors in a variety of disciplines and skill areas such as writing, math, international languages, sciences, speech and presentations, nursing, economics, business, and group project planning.
• Accessible Education Services assists students with disabilities each semester through academic accommodations such as extended time on exams, housing accommodations, assistive technology, and other individually-tailored accommodations, according to student need.
• First Generation Student Programs serve students where neither parent or guardian has earned a four-year college degree.
• Learning Assistance Counseling is available to assist students in developing learning strategies and skills. Students work with the learning assistance counselor to develop and refine the academic skills and tools necessary to best meet the student’s needs

Clark Library

The Clark Library provides students with extensive information resources and help with using them effectively. New students can learn more by visiting the online Library Orientation.

Campus Safety

The University's Department of Campus Safety exists to serve the campus community by maintaining a safe, secure, and enjoyable campus environment for all members of the University community and its guests.

Campus Safety is open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and is available to assist students with any issues regarding safety, transportation regulations, emergency preparedness, environmental policies, and building/room access.

Residence Life

Residence Life coordinates housing for the UP community in traditional residence halls and two apartment-style halls for upper-class students.

Living on campus connects you to the vibrant life of the University. The close-knit, supportive residence hall communities offer students a place to live and work that distinctly enhances their college experience by putting them at the center of everything: classes and labs, the library, recreational facilities, campus ministry, volunteer service opportunities, and more.

The Office of Residence Life provides student resident assistants (RAs) and hall staff members (hall directors and assistant hall directors) in every residence hall, and is available to assist with any issues regarding housing and campus policies.

Registrar

The Office of the Registrar is your one-stop shop for all things academic. The registrar maintains all permanent academic records, and provides course schedules, registration information, and student schedules. The office, located on the first floor of Waldschmidt Hall, also coordinates classroom assignments and processes transcript and enrollment verification requests.

Financial Aid

The Office of Financial Aid is located on the first floor of Waldschmidt Hall. The team members in the Office of Financial Aid are happy to answer questions and offer guidance to students and parents about loans, scholarships, the FAFSA and more.

Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry helps students develop in faith, explore relationships with God and neighbor, and build a community while in college. Campus Ministry offers a variety of experiences of prayer, retreats, faith-sharing groups, and leadership opportunities. Guided by the mission of the Congregation of Holy Cross, Campus Ministry shares in the University's central goal of educating the heart and mind. Rooted in the Roman Catholic tradition, we respect and seek to nurture the development of all who seek God.

Moreau Center for Service and Justice

The Moreau Center for Service and Justice partners with local and global communities for service work, partnerships, volunteer opportunities, and immersions. Through these experiences, the Moreau Center engages critical human and environmental concerns through active learning, mutually beneficial service, and experience-based leadership development rooted in Catholic social teaching. The Moreau Centers strives to fulfill this mission by offering opportunities to engage in service, experience immersion, and explore leadership.
