What was it like being among the first in your family to go to college?

Being the first in my family to go to college was challenging to navigate and nerve-wracking. I had to navigate the college application process and decision-making on my own. After doing so, I felt so accomplished and was able to help my brother navigate this process as well. My parents have always pushed me to pursue higher education as they were not able to themselves. As a child, my dream job was to become a nurse and my family has supported me in this throughout my whole life. Although navigating college with little help was challenging, the support and encouragement from my family is what made it less stressful. Although I had options closer to home, my parents supported my decision to pursue my nursing education at UP..

What does it mean for your personally to be a part of the FGEN community and, specifically, to be a FGEN student ambassador?

Being a part of the FGEN community and being a mentor has meant so much to me. Coming in as a freshman, lost and confused, was challenging but having a mentor that could help me to navigate this change was so helpful. I was really lucky to receive this support as many people might not be able to receive the same. I have learned to embrace being a first-generation college student and that it is not something to be ashamed of. As an FGEN mentor, I will be able to help incoming students feel welcomed, accepted and know that they are capable of doing so many amazing things.

What is your advice to FGEN students at UP who are facing challenges?

The advice I would give is that you are not alone in feeling confused or overwhelmed transitioning to UP. The FGEN community is here to support you. We were all in your shoes our freshman year and by having a mentor, we were able to feel supported throughout our transition. We are here to help you with everything and anything. Do not be afraid to reach out when you are feeling lost, alone, or just need someone to talk to.

Did a mentor play a role in your experience?

Transitioning to UP was truly a confusing and challenging time for me. Not being able to be on campus and meet new people was really hard. Having a mentor who was there to help me navigate this process was beyond helpful. Knowing that I was a part of such an amazing and supportive community that was there for me whenever I need it was so reassuring and comforting. She helped me realize that I was not alone in feeling overwhelmed or confused during my transition. Having a mentor allowed me to realize how much this program has helped me. This then allowed me to realize that I wanted to be a part of this support system for future students and give back to those who helped me along the way.

What resources have been significant, meaningful or helpful for you so far during your UP experience?

Office hours have been a great resource to help me better understand what I was learning. UP has great resources that allow you to get help in any subject. I have used the writing center to help me better my writing skills and have used these resources for many other classes. Both professors and other students are there to help you in every way possible. UP has provided me with so many ways to receive support both academically and socially.
