FGEN Programs

We offer several opportunities for members of the first generation community to connect. Interested in attending an event or possibly serving in a leadership role? Have an idea for a new event? Contact Matt Daily, program manager, at firstgen@up.edu or 503.943.7895.

Summer Launch Pre-Orientation Event

In July, 2015 the first pre-orientation program was designed specifically for incoming FGEN students. Each summer, incoming FGEN students are invited to the University of Portland campus for a day-long summer orientation program – a "summer launch." Incoming students will hear insights from current FGEN students, faculty, and staff. Workshops will be led by current FGEN students.

Sample Schedule for Summer Launch

New Student Orientation Session - incoming students and families

Led by Matt Daily, first generation program manager, along with current FGEN students, faculty and staff, this session will offer an introduction to the FGEN community at the University of Portland. The session takes place in August during New Student Orientation Weekend, and features an informal and casual setting. Challenges specific to first generation families are discussed, services and connections available here on campus, and advice on how all can make the most of the new experience at UP.

FirstUP Social

In September, we host our annual event, FirstUP. The FirstUP social is a welcome event specific for our first year first-generation students, and is the first opportunity to gather collectively as a community. Current and new students will have a chance to meet other first-generation students, faculty and staff, share conversation and stories, and, importantly, begin building your community at UP.

FGEN Networking Workshop

Early in the second semester we offer a workshop for FGEN students emphasizing the importance of developing academic and professional relationships. FGEN students are given skills to build a professional network and to help them define and achieve their goals. In addition, discussion is focused on role models and how they can serve a specific niche, both personally and professionally. Finally, participants are connected to members of the Career Center, and oriented to the many resources that are available to them. FGEN upperclassmen and FGEN faculty/staff are selected to serve on a collective panel, in which participants can engage in dialog about defined topics. The panel explores common themes within the FGEN experience, and how each individual has navigated relationships within their academic and professional careers.

FGEN Recognition Social

In April, we offer an end of the year recognition social event for all FGEN students. Graduating seniors are recognized for their accomplishments and leadership within the FGEN community. In addition, we seek to honor other members of the FGEN community for their successes as all depart campus. Finally, students traditionally engage in dialog amongst their peers as well as their invited faculty/staff guests, making for an evening of collaboration and celebration.
