Rev. James Gallagher, C.S.C., appointed Director of Campus Ministry

Campus Ministry

January 19, 2015

Rev. James Gallagher, C.S.C., has been appointed Director of Campus Ministry at the University of Portland, effective July 1, 2015.

Fr. Gallagher has served in the Holy Cross Office of Vocations in Notre Dame, Ind., since 2008 and as the Director since 2009.  As the Director of the Office of Vocations, he has helped to coordinate the efforts of the priests and brothers of the United States Province to invite men to consider becoming a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross. This has included developing and preaching retreats on discernment, expanding the use of social media for increased awareness and accessibility of Holy Cross, and coordinating vocation promotion efforts on Holy Cross campuses across the United States.

“Nurturing the faith life of the campus community is one of the important tasks of a Catholic university,” Fr. Gallagher said. “It is humbling and thrilling to be asked to enter into the heart of this good work already in motion at the University of Portland. I very much look forward to rejoining the wonderful community at UP.”

A native of South Bend, Ind., Fr. Gallagher earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering ‘98 and a Master of Divinity '06 from the University of Notre Dame prior to his ordination in 2007. Before entering full time vocation ministry, he served for two years at the University of Portland, working with retreats and liturgy in Campus Ministry and as a Residence Hall Director in Shipstad Hall.  In addition to his position as Vocation Director, Fr. Gallagher has served since 2008 as priest-in-residence in Zahm Hall on the Notre Dame campus.

“We are excited to have Father Gallagher return to campus as a member of our University community,” said University of Portland President Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C. “Campus Ministry is an integral part of our Catholic identity and mission, and we are once again grateful to the Congregation of Holy Cross for assigning a priest to the University for service as director. Fr. Jim is widely respected for his leadership, dedication, and administrative skill, all of which make him an excellent choice to lead the University’s Campus Ministry program.”

Rev. Gerard J. Olinger, C.S.C., Vice President for Student Affairs, joined in Fr. Poorman’s excitement about Fr. Gallagher’s appointment and praised the service of Rev. Mark DeMott, C.S.C., Interim Director of Campus Ministry for the past year.

“I am grateful to Fr. DeMott for his excellent service and leadership during his time as Interim Director of Campus Ministry,” Fr. Olinger said. “He has brought new vision and energy to the department and always has the best interest of our students in the forefront.  He will be missed on the campus as he transitions this summer to begin preparations for doctoral studies, but I am confident that he will bring this same energy and enthusiasm into his studies.”
