International Languages and Cultures

July 24, 2017

Seven University of Portland graduates have been awarded International Government Teaching Awards in 2017, according to the University’s international languages and cultures department. All will be serving in English teaching assistantships (ETAs) during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Four English teaching assistantships have been granted to University of Portland French studies graduates by the French government. Emma Bauer ’17, Clare Munger ’15, and Jenna Kunz ’17 will be teaching in France during the 2017-2018 academic year. Jessica Busek ’17 was also accepted to the program, but has instead accepted a Fulbright grant to teach in Luxembourg. Of the four UP students who applied for the French assistantships, all were awarded the positions.

The assistantships are sponsored by the French Ministry of Education and the Cultural Services office of the French Embassy and give eligible French majors the opportunity to teach English in French elementary and high schools. The French Ministry of Education sets aside over 1,100 Teaching Assistantships for Americans every year, and recipients work in France for 7 months, teaching English to French students of all ages.

German studies graduates Heidi Grompe ’17 and Pearl Kahle ’17 have accepted ETA positions in Austria, and Hanna Nightingale ’17 has accepted a Fulbright English ETA in Germany. Each year, more than 140 college graduates from the United States teach in Austria under the auspices of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education (BMBForeign Language Teaching Assistantship Program. The program brings young people from abroad into the classrooms of secondary schools in communities all over Austria. Ultimately, it is the job of these native speakers as teaching assistants to make learning a foreign language a lively cross-cultural encounter for their students.
