$100K Challenge Venture Competition Results Are In: 2018 Winners

The Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation’s annual $100K Challenge Venture Competition took place on Saturday, April 28, according to Peter Rachor, Director for Entrepreneurship. In all, 30 teams competed in six morning Venture flights; eight For Profit finalists went on to compete in the afternoon finals flight; and five students participated in the Invention flight. The top finishers from each flight will each receive a cash award to help further their entrepreneurial efforts.

“The Franz Center is proud of the students and teams who made this a year to remember,” said Rachor. “This competition provides students with the opportunity to receive feedback on their proposed ventures from within the local entrepreneurial community, win cash awards, and move on to the opportunity to acquire seed funding that will help advance their entrepreneurial opportunities to the next stage. Many thanks to the judges, mentors, and faculty advisors who made this year’s $100K a great educational experience for students from across the UP curriculum.”

After deliberation by expert panels of alumni and community judges, the winners are:

For Profit Venture:

  • 1st Place: ColorBlind Ramps, a lightweight and portable skateboard ramp, designed by Ben Kallen ’18, mechanical engineering
  • 2nd Place: Produce Mate, a mat emitting negatively charged ions to extend the life of produce for consumers, by Dagan Kay ’19, philosophy
  • 3rd Place: DreamGrounds, a design/build firm for creative playgrounds, by Lucas Cummings ’19, business administration

Social Enterprise Venture:

  • 1st Place: Veridian Greens, a vertical hydroponic farming social venture reducing the footprint of produce production, by Murdock ’18

Invention:

  • 1st Place: TrailHungry, a system for wilderness meal preparation, by Adam Babuka ’18 MBA, business administration
  • 2nd Place: Produce Mate, a mat emitting negatively charged ions to extend the life of produce for consumers, by Dagan Kay’19, philosophy

Invention winners will also represent the Franz Center at the Statewide InventOR competition in Klamath Falls on June 29.
