University of Portland will transition to online class instruction beginning March 18 in response to COVID-19

March 12, 2020

The Office of the President at University of Portland has announced that all in-person classes will transition to online instruction effective Wednesday, March 18.  To prepare for the transition, no classes will be held on Monday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 17.  The decision is a continuation of other on-campus steps taken in response to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. University President Rev. Mark L. Poorman, C.S.C., made the announcement this morning.  UP is also cancelling or postponing events and meetings attracting large crowds in accordance with mandates from local, state and national health authorities.

“The health and safety of UP community members remain our top priorities,” said Father Poorman.  “Since the onset of the outbreak, leaders from across campus have continuously evaluated and implemented measures to promote the wellbeing of students, faculty, and staff.  In recent days, with the continued spread of COVID-19 in the United States (including in the Greater Portland area), we have determined that additional steps are now necessary.”

UP students are encouraged to return to their homes or permanent addresses during the virtual learning implementation.  However, residence halls will remain open for students living on campus and unable to immediately return to residences elsewhere.  Other University facilities and operations will remain accessible to faculty, staff and students, including dining halls, Health and Counseling Center and other resources.

Administrative offices will also continue operations, with the implementation of flexible work schedules as needed by UP staff and other employees.
