About the Vice President

Rev. John J. Donato, C.S.C., is Vice President for Student Affairs at the University of Portland.

From 2007 to 2015, he served as the Associate Vice President for Student Development. In that role, he had direct responsibility for the Offices of International Student Services, Residence Life, and Student Activities, as well as the Moreau Center. Additionally Father Donato has served as the Deputy Title IX Coordinator for Students and Co-Chair of the Early Alert Program, Director and Senior Associate Director of Campus Ministry and has taught as an adjunct instructor in the Theology Department. During the first nine years of his priestly ministry, he served in parishes in California, Indiana, and Florida. Before beginning his role in university administration, Father Donato served as the Director of Human Formation at Mount Angel Seminary.

Fr. Donato earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and theology from the University of Notre Dame in 1986, where he earned a master of divinity degree in 1990 and a master of science in administration in 1997, and completed his doctorate in educational leadership in 2005 from Seattle University.

Fr. Donato is also currently the pastoral resident for Schoenfeldt Hall.

About the Special Assistant to the Vice President

Colin Stewart is the Special Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs.

Colin Stewart grew up in the Pacific Northwest and is a dynamic and transformative leader with 18 years of distinguished experience in Student Affairs. He is excited about the opportunity to serve the students at the University of Portland. With a strong foundation in Catholic higher education, Colin has successfully led Housing and Residence Life, Student Conduct, Student Activities, Leadership Programs, Student Unions, Campus Recreation, Theatres, and Multicultural Student Engagement. His strategic initiatives have revolutionized campus life through large signature events, student unions, men’s success programs, artificial intelligence, leadership development, and pioneering esports initiatives.

Colin's unwavering dedication to inclusion and creativity is evident throughout his professional journey. He holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Illinois State University and a M.Ed. in Student Development Administration from Seattle University. He is also a co-editor of the influential book Disruptive Transformation: Leading Creative and Innovative Teams in Higher Education. At the University of Portland, Colin is excited to leverage his extensive experience and passion for creating exceptional student and staff experiences to support and enrich the university community.
