University of Portland receives $200,000 RISE Campaign donation from Mucki Tan of Singapore
Tan’s company started in the 1950s as an importer of goods. Since then, it has expanded activities worldwide and includes construction materials, basic chemicals, glass, metals, diamond-cutting tools industry as well as consumer goods, food and packaging.
In July, 1996, Mucki and his wife founded a private school, Sekolah Tiara Bangas (STB) in Cibubur, just outside Jakarta, Indonesia. In 2002, STB entered into a partnership with Anglo Chinese School (ACS) in Singapore. Today STB-ACS International offers a full pre-school through grade 12 academic curriculum (including the International Baccalaureate) and a sports program with facilities that include basketball, badminton and volleyball courts, seven tennis courts, four soccer fields, three swimming pools and a full gymnasium.
Tan’s gift is part of the University’s RISE Campaign, which was announced in December 2010 and seeks to raise $175 million over the next several years. The RISE Campaign, which has raised more than $143 million to date, is one of the largest development campaigns ever for a Pacific Northwest private college or university.
The campaign’s goals are divided into four major themes, each with funding targets: (1) Pursuing academic excellence and faculty funding – $70 million; (2) Providing access for all students and direct assistance – $45 million; (3) Developing faith and leadership – $10 million; and (4) Enriching the campus community and physical resources – $50 million.
The University of Portland is Oregon's Catholic university and has been closely affiliated for more than a century with the Congregation of Holy Cross in South Bend, Indiana.
