Math Placement Test

For Fall admits:

For students beginning fall semester, the math placement test will be available March 1; it is due June 10. For fall semester students admitted after May 1, should complete the Math Placement Test within two weeks of confirmation of enrollment. 

For Spring admits:

For students beginning spring semester, the Math Placement Test should be completed by January 1. All students beginning spring semester who wish to take the placement test will need to contact mathplacement@up.edu to request access to the test.

If you are in a major requiring Calculus (Math 201), instructions will be emailed to your UP email address and the test will be accessed on Moodle.

If you are not in a major requiring Calculus, but need to take Math 201, please email mathplacement@up.edu and request access to the exam. You will be emailed instructions for the exam once you have been given access.

Who needs to take the Math Placement Test?

Please note that all new students interested in or required to take MTH 201 (Calculus) are required to take the math placement test regardless of AP or IB credit for calculus.

• College of Arts & Sciences: Physics, chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science (not EEP), and math majors need to take the math placement test as they will take calculus or pre-calculus (depending on placement) in their first semester. Biology majors do not need to take the math placement test before their first semester. They will be advised in the first meeting with their program counselor during the middle of Fall semester, about when or if they need to take the math placement test for calculus. The math placement exam should be taken prior to the semester where they might take calculus.
• Business: Business students who are considering minoring or double-majoring in Math should take the math placement test.
• Engineering: All engineering students are required to take the math placement test.
• Education: Students interested in teaching math should take the placement test.
• Nursing: Nursing majors are not required to take the math placement test.
