Students returning to campus for Spring semester will find plenty of changes thanks to COVID-19 protocols. The COVID-19 Steering Committee strives to clarify how returning students (as well as faculty and staff) can navigate new processes and policies aimed at keeping the on-campus community as safe and healthy as possible. Many of the University’s student services departments have changed their methods of student access to resources. This week we will explore the Career Center, Health & Counseling Center, and recreational services.

Career Center

Students who are thinking about internships, summer jobs, and what comes next after graduation are encouraged to utilize the resources and services in the Career Education Center. Connect with the Career Education Center through individual appointments, daily virtual Open Office Hours, and spring programs and events. The Career Education Center provides support with a variety of career topics including: career counseling, career exploration, choosing/changing a major, internship and job search strategies, resumes/cover letters, interview preparation and practice interviews, networking, and negotiating an internship or job offer. Get started by activating your Handshake profile to schedule a phone or video appointment, to search for internship and job opportunities, and to connect with employers. Join us for our many programs and events to hear from alumni and employers and follow us on following us on Instagram to get the latest updates. s. Students are encouraged to to contact the Career Center, explore the center's handouts and resources, and utilize current resources for navigating next steps.

Health and Counseling Center

The Health and Counseling Center has been in the unique position of remaining open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, according to nurse practitioner Kaylin Soldat. Center staff have been busy fielding calls and emails from students and are opening a self-scheduling option on the student health portal starting Friday, January 22, and are currently open for in-person and telemedicine visits from students. While in-person visits are open to both on-campus and off-campus students, only Oregon residents can take advantage of the telehealth option.

In the meantime, students who want to schedule a COVID-related or other primary care appointment can call 503.943.7134 or email hcc@up.edu Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please leave a detailed voice message with your name and a call back number. If you are currently experiencing a health emergency, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

On the vaccination front, Soldat and Health Center staff are working with the COVID-19 Steering Committee to form a plan, but the process is in its early stages. “We are exploring all options to give everyone—students, faculty, and staff—information about how to access the vaccine in the future,” she says.

Recreational Services

After the onset of COVID-19, the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center reopened briefly with enhanced safety measures but closed on November 17, 2020, in accordance with state and county guidelines. Reopening in the Spring 2021 semester will rely upon state, county, and University guidance. Outdoor Pursuits rentals and online fitness classes have been operating and will continue.

According to Scott Leykam, vice president for athletics, “We continue to work with the governor’s office and Oregon Health Authority to design indoor recreation plans for our students, faculty, and staff that we will put into place as soon as we are permitted to open the building. In the meantime, we have plans to offer outdoor recreation opportunities for the Spring semester.”

“The outdoor workout space will be located under a tent next to the Beauchamp Center and will provide dumbbells, benches, kettlebells, medicine balls, stationary bikes, rowers, jump ropes, boxes and more,” says Kaitlin Bourne of recreational services. For faculty and staff, COVID precautions require masks covering the nose and mouth at all times, six feet of distancing, a temperature check, a list of COVID questions, and a liability release (if not completed in Fall 2020). Students will need to complete their initial quarantine period and sign up through Carbon Health before using the outdoor workout area.
