Off-Campus Student and Visitor Access for Spring Semester Explained

February 2, 2021

Residential students have emerged from their early semester quarantines, some campus facilities have reopened for use by on- and off-campus students as well as faculty and staff, and questions are arising about campus visitors.

Even with campus re-opening for classes, study, and some recreation activities, UP essentially remains a closed campus this semester.

“We want to reduce opportunities for COVID exposure as much as possible,” says Joe Kaleel, chair of UP’s COVID-19 Response Team. “By discouraging visitors to campus, what we’re really trying to do is set our campus community up for success. And that means that right now we are open specifically for business related to the core of our mission. And that business is educating students.”

Here’s what access to campus means for residential students, students living off-campus, faculty and staff, and visitors at large.

On-Campus Students

On-campus students have access to the study space in Clark Library, Beauchamp Center (currently limited to outdoor workouts for all students), and Bauccio Commons for take out dining. Students are only allowed to enter their own residence halls and have access to academic buildings in which their in-person class or classes are held.

“Visitors, including other UP students, parents, or other friends, are not allowed in residence halls,” says Andrew Weingarten, director of residence life. “And we’re asking student to keep their ‘bubble’ as small as possible. That also means refraining from having visitors on campus and limiting unnecessary travel.”

Off-Campus Students

UP students living off campus have access to the study space in Clark Library, Beauchamp Center (currently limited to outdoor workouts for all students), and Bauccio Commons for take out dining. Some off-campus students may also have in-person labs or clinicals. Access to campus residence halls is limited to residents only.

All off-campus students planning to use campus facilities this semester are requested to sign the Pilots Prevent Pledge. (On-campus students signed the pledge at move-in.) After signing the Pilots Prevent Pledge, students will receive an email invitation to register with Carbon Health. Within three days of registering with Carbon Health and submitting proof via a screen capture of the Carbon Health profile, the UP ID card will be updated with access to the appropriate campus facilities. Students will need to complete the Carbon Health symptom monitor every day in order to maintain access to campus facilities; successfully completing the symptom monitor gives students a “passport” on the app they will show when checking into Beauchamp Center, the library, or Bauccio Commons. Off-campus students who have registered with Carbon Health and wish to continue using campus facilities will be required to test when selected for random surveillance a few times during the semester.

Visitors

Students are requested to refrain from bringing visitors to campus, and the campus grounds remain closed to visitors without a legitimate business purpose at UP. Exceptions to this policy include prospective students and their family members who have preregistered for tours with the admissions office. Admissions expects to begin hosting small group tours March 1.

Faculty and Staff

Faculty who are not teaching in person may come to campus to use their offices or reserve a classroom in Franz Hall for teaching purposes.  With the exception of essential campus workers, all other UP employees should work from home as much as possible. When coming to campus, employees should use the Campus Clear app to monitor symptoms before arriving on campus.

When on campus all students and employees are reminded to stay masked up and maintain appropriate physical distancing even when outdoors.
