Holy Cross priest and University of Portland professor Rev. Claude Pomerleau, C.S.C., passed away on the morning of Sunday, July 21. After a long battle with cancer, Fr. Pomerleau resided for the last month at the Holy Cross nursing home in Notre Dame, Indiana. During this time, he enjoyed many meaningful visits with family and friends that gave him deep peace as he passed from this life.

The memorial service for Deputy Justin DeRosier will be held on Wednesday, April 24 at 1 p.m. in the Chiles Center. Deputy DeRosier was killed in the line of duty while on patrol in Cowlitz County, Washington. The University is expecting capacity crowds with hundreds of uniformed officers and friends in attendance that day.

Professor of Civil Engineering, will serve as interim dean of the Donald P. Shiley School of Engineering beginning June 30 until a permanent successor is named. Kuhn has requested that he not be a candidate for the permanent position.

UP currently has 12 alumni serving around the world. Since the Peace Corps’ founding in 1961, more than 220 University graduates have become Peace Corp volunteers.

The University of Portland has received a $30,000 grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust for a new biology faculty position. This grant is part of the New Faculty Start-up Grants program and is the fifth award that the Murdock Trust has made to support science faculty at UP since 2013.

Nuxoll will take part in a faculty exchange to Thailand for three weeks this July and will teach at Khon Kaen University. During his exchange, Nuxoll will be researching, teaching a workshop, and giving lectures on ethical issues in software and artificial episodic memory.

‘Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead’ February 13-16, 7:30 p.m. and February 16, 2 p.m. In this “unauthorized parody” of an iconic comic strip, CB questions the meaning of life and death following the demise of his dog. His friends have their own problems and aren’t much help. But his interest in an artistic boy — the target of his group’s bullying — sets events in motion that propel teen angst to its very limits. The play explores mature themes that relate to growing up.
