julia-resized.jpg“My favorite subject wasn’t math or science, it was art! However, I like a good challenge and I have always been drawn to problem solving, especially when it comes to helping people. After taking some classes, talking with the Career Center, and exploring internships, I realized that civil engineering had a lot of opportunity for a creative thinker like me.

After starting at UP, I had summer internships at two companies in Hawaii. I knew I wanted to return to my home state after graduation, and these internships gave me good insight into the local industry and the day-to-day life of a civil engineer. They also led to job opportunities at both companies. I now work to create solutions for site and infrastructure design, investigating things such as grading, drainage, utility improvements, and subdivision layouts.

While at UP I participated in the University Innovation Fellows (UIF) and Entrepreneur Scholars (E-Scholars) programs, both of which really enhanced my career path. I loved being able to work with students from other majors, brainstorming, collaborating, and challenging one another. I traveled to California, Colorado, Arizona, New York, Italy, and France to test my ideas and expand my skills. I learned how to push the boundaries of what’s possible, ask the right questions from students, mentors, and professionals, and advocate for myself, my team, and my projects.

UP is a great place to pursue anything you’re interested in. Whatever you’re passionate about, there are people around and tons of resources to help you pursue it.”
