IES Nantes Semester

Study abroad in Nantes for a semester!

Nantes is the perfect place to improve your French language skills. That’s because it’s not a tourist destination, so English is rarely spoken. But Nantes is a spectacularly beautiful city on the Loire River, featuring gorgeous architecture including its own castle, charming (and charmingly quirky) attractions, and beautiful outdoor spaces. Nantes is also home to some of the most delicious food France has to offer like crêpes, fish with beurre blanc, buttery cakes, and, of course, wonderful regional cheeses. It’s also very manageable, eco-friendly, and great to bike around in. Located on the Loire River, Nantes—France’s sixth largest city—has all the amenities of a big city: world-class museums, breathtaking cathedrals, a great public transportation system, and even its own château. But the best thing about Nantes for study abroad? It’s small enough to feel like home. (IES Abroad).

We have partnered with IES Abroad to offer this semester-long program where Nantes will be your classroom. Wherever possible, the courses take advantage of the city’s many historical, artistic, and cultural sites, and several courses include course-related trips. Specially designed to improve your French language skills, this program draws upon Nantes’ rich culture and traditions to connect your coursework with the living history of the city. IES Abroad courses are taught in French by local faculty, and a variety of academic options are available at local universities.

As part of the immersive experience, you will live with a French host family and have the chance to interact with French students on campus. You will be able to practice your French, experience the everyday life in a French household, and interact with the community.  There will be plenty of excursions to participate in, including but not limited to Caen, Normandy Beaches, Mont Saint-Michel, Muscadet Vineyards, or the Loire Valley Castles. The IES Abroad team is always revising their excursions to ensure that you will have an enriching academic and cultural experience.

Our office will be with you every step of the way. While you apply to this program, you will be able to meet with our staff or one of our Student Advisors who have just returned from their own time abroad. We offer guidance and support during the application process, then we will ensure you are prepared for your trip with mandatory predeparture orientations and informational sessions, and continue to work with you as you reintegrate into the UP campus life.

The cost of this program is similar to the cost of Tuition and Room + Board for a single semester on campus. While this program is open to all majors, institutional aid and scholarships apply only for French Majors. We require non-French Majors to meet with our staff to talk about the financial aspects of this program. We also have a UP Study Abroad Scholarship you can apply to!

PRE-REQUIREMENT: Students must have completed FRN 301 & 302, or FRN 308, to be eligible for this program. Since most students study abroad in their sophomore year, you might need to consider your schedule carefully.
