FIRST and VEX Scholarship Application

Student works on an engineering project.University of Portland is pleased to offer five $3,000 merit-based scholarships to students who participated in a high school FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), or a VEX Robotics Competition (either virtual or in-person). Each scholarship is renewable for four years, for a total of $12,000. The recipient must maintain a 2.7 cumulative GPA, remain in a STEM major, and maintain satisfactory academic progress for renewal eligibility.

Who can apply?

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be a high school senior.
  • Have participated in a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team, a FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) team, or a VEX Robotics team during high school (both virtual and in-person competitions are acceptable).
  • Be admitted to University of Portland as a full-time undergraduate student in a STEM major (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics). Nursing and Integrative Health and Wellness majors are not eligible.
  • Have a high school GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • ​​Have the authorization to work in the United States full-time for purposes other than training (student/temporary visas do not qualify).

To apply for the UP FIRST Scholarship, please submit this application with the following:

  1. A personal statement describing your qualifications for this scholarship
  2. A letter of recommendation from an adult mentor or coach on your FIRST or VEX team
