Holy Cross Missions Fundraising

The University of Portland is proud to be a Holy Cross institution, and we want to support the work that the Congregation of Holy Cross is doing all over the world to improve the lives of others. Holy Cross International Missions has apostolates around the globe, running schools for underserved children, seeking social justice for the poor and marginalized, sponsoring health clinics and job training programs, and being the hands and feet of Christ everywhere they go.

Each of our residence halls selects a Holy Cross Missions apostolate somewhere in the world and works to raise money to support the efforts there. Some of our halls' most well-known events are fundraisers for which all profits are sent to the Holy Cross Missions Center for distribution to their designated apostolate. Read more about each hall's fundraising efforts below.

  • Christie Hall hosts Christie Pub, an open mic night where all members of campus are invited to perform music or comedy or read poetry, while commemorative mugs and unlimited root beer floats raise money. Last year Christie raised over a thousand dollars for the Boma Rescue Center for Street Children in Nairobi & Dandorra, Kenya.
  • Corrado Hall has an annual talent competition called Crown of Corrado in which residents show off their skills and try to gain votes toward winning the crown. Proceeds from this and other efforts in the hall raised over a thousand dollars last year to send to the Holy Cross Mission Schools in Bangladesh.
  • Fields Hall is well known for its late-night flapjack feasts, where everyone pays a small amount per pancake that adds up to a lot over the course of the year! Fields also hosts an annual trivia night that highlights the skills of some of UP's staff and faculty. Last year Fields' contributions went to the Nursery School at St. Brendan's Parish in Kitete, Tanzania.
  • Haggerty & Tyson hosts a huge Oktoberfest gathering each year in the breezeway between apartments, where you can enjoy good company, good music, good German food, and (if you're of age) good seasonal brews. Their profits last year supported the work of the Holy Cross school in Fort-Liberté, Haiti.
  • Kenna Hall wants you to lace up those running shoes — or don some grotesque face paint — and join in the annual Kenna Zombie Run. This 5K around campus raised hundreds of dollars last year for Our Lady of Visitation Newborn Clinic in Nairobi & Dandorra, Kenya.
  • Lund Family Hall is joining the fundraising efforts in its first year to support the Lostete Health Clinic in Kitete, Tanzania, which provides basic medical care to local villagers who cannot travel the 30 miles to the nearest hospital.
  • Mehling Hall takes a more refined approach with the annual Fall Charity Ball. Residents dress up for a catered dinner and can contribute toward Mehling's chosen apostolate. This past year Mehling raised money for Care for the Homebound and Aged in Santiago, Chile.
  • Schoenfeldt Hall hosts a Super Smash Bros. tournament each year, among other fundraising initiatives. Last year their contributions supported Fundamor - Fundación Moreau in Chile, which supports children who have been abused or abandoned by their parents.
  • Shipstad Hall has two large fundraising events: Sandspike, a volleyball tournament, and the Shipstad Ball Drop, in which dozens of ping-pong balls are dropped onto the quad in a chance for students to win prizes. With these and other efforts, Shipstad raised over a thousand dollars last year for Holy Cross Lake View Senior Secondary School in Jinja, Uganda.
  • Villa Maria Hall has the largest of all campus events raising money for Holy Cross International Missions. The Villa Maria Auction started in the lobby of Villa Maria Hall and now fills the Chiles Center with students, staff, faculty, parents, and guests watching groups of Villans perform short skits, songs, or dances before auctioning off a group date. Each year this event raises thousands of dollars for Holy Cross Missions in Peru, most recently the Yancana Huasy Mission, which works with young people with disabilities in a poor area of the country.

We are proud of our residents for their continued efforts to give back and support the work of Holy Cross around the world!
